Smashcast & History of Jazz iPad app

Smashcast had an opportunity to meet 955 Dreams, a mobile app development company supported by Kapor Capital, to test out their new History of Jazz app for the Apple iPad. The app provided an interactive lesson on Jazz History, Black History, and iPad app development.

The goal of this video was to showcase the Smashcast students interacting with entrepreneurs in the tech industry. Smashcast exposes teens to tech, and Kapor Capital supports seed stage tech startups, so this was a perfect pairing of Kapor Center organizations.

In producing the video, we wanted to use soundbytes from the 955 Dreams lecture to narrate the video and provide context for the the hands-on iPad exploration that you see the students doing. On top of that, we interviewed the students on green screen about what they learned from the app, and then composited them over related screenshots from the app itself. To make the video feel more cohesive we only used visual assets from the iPad app for all of the videos graphical elements. Notice the lower 3rds titles and background graphics are all created using assets from the original app.

As visually stimulating as this might seem, 4min of video is hardly enough to do the encounter justice! There was so much that the students learned in just a few hours from these entrepreneurs, and in return, the 955 Dreams team received a great deal of user feedback from these tech savvy teens!
